In Factorio you are stranded on an alien planet and start out mining the first resources by hand. Your goal is a rocket that takes you away from here, and the road there runs through a factory that keeps on growing. Individual machines turn into entire industrial landscapes over time.
Automation is the core of the game. Conveyor belts, inserters, production lines and rail networks mesh together, and every technology you research opens up more efficient solutions. Planning carefully from the start saves you from rebuilding whole sections of the factory later on.
You are not left in peace, though. The pollution from your plants attracts the native creatures, which attack your factory, and the ore patches are finite. Defence, supply and expansion therefore all need your attention at the same time.
