DayZ drops you into a post-apocalyptic world with no equipment, where every step counts. Hunger, thirst, injuries and cold are just as dangerous as the infected roaming the ruins. Surviving means gathering supplies, treating wounds and learning to read your surroundings.
The biggest draw is meeting other players. Every encounter can end in a trade, an alliance or a firefight, and nobody knows in advance what the other side intends. You decide whether you seek out open combat or prefer to survive quietly on your own.
On top of that comes the freedom of the open world: exploring vast maps, building shelters, repairing vehicles and finding your own path. Mods add new items, maps and rules, and noticeably change the character of a session.
